During the first two years of Wine Speak, we asked a select group of New World winemakers to share their insights, wisdom and experiences, so that we could all learn while fostering camaraderie and collaboration. Now, for Wine Speak 2020, we are incorporating some Old World perspective, starting with Lionel Faury of Domaine Faury.
In the words of Wine Speak Co-Founder Chuck Furuya, “This northern Rhone Valley domaine was created in 1979, with Lionel taking the reins from his father in 2006. Domaine Faury features wines from mainly the hillsides of St. Joseph, Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie—essentially the world’s epicenter for Syrah and Viognier. I brought bottles of each with me to share at the past Wine Speak events, because of the mesmerizing purity and real artisanal winemaking that they deftly displayed.Furthermore, wine historians believe that Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie were first planted by the Romans, so there is a strong sense of place and history in their vineyards. This domaine therefore “approaches their craft with attention to detail, with nothing done in haste. Every method used encourages the grape towards greatness with the ultimate respect for its fragility and terroir.”Just imagine what we can learn from this truly standout vigneron.”
